POSITION: Development and Communication Director

REPORTS TO: Executive Director

COMPANY SUMMARY: The ALS Association Arizona Chapter is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving people and their families living with ALS by providing support, facilitating the provision of care, promoting awareness, and helping find a cure. All staff is involved in these activities in varying degrees. The duties described below provide guidance for the employee who is expected to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with other staff and volunteers, in order to ensure excellent teamwork for achieving the aims of the Chapter.

JOB SUMMARY: Under the Direction of the Executive Director and according to the policies of The ALS Association Arizona Chapter, the Development and Communications Director will be responsible for creating and overseeing the implementation of a strategic approach to fundraising and communication which will include major gifts, corporate donations, grant solicitation, events and in-kind resources as well as development and implementation of a comprehensive communications plan that includes both website and newsletters.

QUALIFICATIONS:

At least 5-years practical fundraising / related communication experience covering a broad spectrum of methodologies (annual giving, special events, major gifts, grant proposals and planned giving). Being a member of AFP is strongly recommended
Candidates will be able to demonstrate a track record of fundraising achievements, a sound knowledge of major gift planning and excellent communication skills
Strong knowledge of Windows-based applications including Microsoft Office are mandatory; database management experience highly preferred. Training or hands-on experience in graphic design is also of value
This position requires someone who is an influential leader with a high energy level and a strong focus on achieving results through teamwork.
Success in managing multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team with a range of people including, but not limited to Board of Directors, volunteers, and staff
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and comply with continuous and multiple deadlines and evolving priorities

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Planning

· Collaborate with Executive Director to create a Fund Development / Communication Plan which increases revenues and enhances awareness to support the strategic direction of The ALS Association Arizona Chapter

· Execute an appropriate blend of annual, major, planned gifts, grant seeking, special events and recognition programs, as outlined in Fund Development Plan

· Monitor and evaluate all fundraising activities to ensure that the fundraising goals are being achieved.

· Develop and manage fund development / communication budget

· Monitor trends and adapt strategies as necessary

· Develop and design appropriate marketing materials for all annual fund activities

· Research public and private grant agencies and foundations to identify other sources of funding

· In consultation with the Executive Director and other staff, identify appropriate avenues for submission of funding proposals

Organization

· Maintain a state-wide development office and state-wide programs

· Coordinate activities with staff engaged in maintaining records of contributors and grants

· Maintain up-to-date donor files respecting confidentiality issues as appropriate

· Develop and implement donor recognition program

· Develop and maintain strong working relationships with donors and sponsors

· Solicit in-kind gifts of services, materials and equipment as appropriate

· Complete projects on time and on budget

· Prepare monthly Revenue Development / Communication report to Executive Director and Board of Directors

· Ensure web site is updated as needed in a timely manner and that development and changes are implemented as requirements are identified

· Coordinate production and distribution of The ALS Association Arizona Chapter’s print and promotional materials including the newsletter

Special Events:

· Ensure / provide staff support to Volunteer Committees responsible for running The ALS Association Arizona Chapter’s special events such as Walks to D-Feet ALS, Golf Tournaments, Third-Party Events, etc.

Annual Giving / Planned Giving:

· Research donor mail and telephone campaigns and, in conjunction with the Executive Director, implement and evaluate as directed

· Identify, develop, implement and evaluate potential contributors to special project funds and supporters of ongoing operations through examination of past records, individual and corporate contracts and knowledge of the community

· Organize solicitation drive of pledges of ongoing support from individuals, corporations and foundations

· Implement planned giving initiatives
